Plantar Fasciitis From Golf

Plantar fasciitis is inflammation of the plantar fascia, the thick band of connective tissue that supports the bottom of the foot. It is most often associated with high impact activities, like running, soccer, and football. One would not normally think of this condition with respect to a low impact game, like golf. However, in addition to trauma to the plantar fascia from high impact sports, plantar fasciitis can be caused by chronic overuse. Golf involves prolonged standing and walking. This can gradually flatten, inflame, and cause small tears in the arch of the foot, leading to heel pain and plantar fasciitis. Improperly swinging the golf club can also be a risk factor for plantar fasciitis. If one overextends while swinging, particularly while wearing shoes that do not support the heel and that might allow the foot to slide around, plantar fasciitis can result. Symptoms of this condition include extreme pain in the heel when walking, especially first thing in the morning. If you feel heel and arch pain that is interfering with your golf game and walking in general, consult with a podiatrist who can make an accurate diagnosis and provide treatment.

  • Achilles Tendon Rupture
  • Ankle Sprains
  • Broken Foot
  • Plantar Fasciitis
  • Stress Fractures
  • Turf Toe

Symptoms

Symptoms vary depending upon the injury and in some cases, there may be no symptoms at all. However, in most cases, some form of symptom is experienced. Pain, aching, burning, bruising, tenderness, tightness or stiffness, sensation loss, difficulty moving, and swelling are the most common symptoms.

Treatment

Just as symptoms vary depending upon the injury, so do treatment options. A common treatment method is known as the RICE method. This method involves rest, applying ice, compression and elevating the afflicted foot or ankle. If the injury appears to be more serious, surgery might be required, such as arthroscopic or reconstructive surgery. Lastly, rehabilitation or therapy might be needed to gain full functionality in the afflicted area. Any discomfort experienced by an athlete must be evaluated by a licensed, reputable medical professional.

Risk Hazards for Developing Flat Feet

Flat feet is a condition that is common among babies and not so much among adults. Most babies are born with flat feet and the arch generally develops during the teenage years. Adults who retain this condition may have been born with an abnormal foot structure or possibly endured a foot injury. Some people have pain from having flat feet which can begin in the arch or heel and radiate to the leg. Additionally, shoes can wear unevenly, and the feet may become swollen and stiff. It is easy to notice as the foot lies completely flat on the floor while standing. When custom-made orthotics are worn, the feet may benefit from the cushioning these devices provide. Existing medical conditions may increase the risk of getting flat feet. These can consist of having diabetes or rheumatoid arthritis, in addition to being overweight. If you have flat feet, it is strongly suggested that you are under the care of a podiatrist who can help you to manage this condition.

Flatfoot is a condition many people suffer from. If you have flat feet, contact one of our podiatrists from Summerlin Foot & Ankle. Our doctors will treat your foot and ankle needs.

What Are Flat Feet?

Flatfoot is a condition in which the arch of the foot is depressed and the sole of the foot is almost completely in contact with the ground. About 20-30% of the population generally has flat feet because their arches never formed during growth.

Conditions & Problems:

Having flat feet makes it difficult to run or walk because of the stress placed on the ankles.

Alignment – The general alignment of your legs can be disrupted, because the ankles move inward which can cause major discomfort.

Knees – If you have complications with your knees, flat feet can be a contributor to arthritis in that area.

Symptoms

  • Pain around the heel or arch area
  • Trouble standing on the tip toe
  • Swelling around the inside of the ankle
  • Flat look to one or both feet
  • Having your shoes feel uneven when worn

Treatment

If you are experiencing pain and stress on the foot you may weaken the posterior tibial tendon, which runs around the inside of the ankle.

Kinds of Running Shoes

If you are a runner, then it is imperative that you select running shoes that are providing your feet with the kind of support that they deserve and need. There are several different broad categories of different running shoes that you might consider buying depending on your precise needs. For example, one main type of running shoe is known as a neutral running shoe. This shoe is primarily meant to absorb shock and feature arches that have medium height. Additionally, another kind of running shoe is known as a stability running shoe. These shoes can be particularly helpful to individuals who are prone to having their feet roll inward and outward during runs. Lastly, there are cushioned running shoes that are particularly beneficial to individuals that strike their heels forcefully when running. Individuals with high heels also can benefit from wearing this kind of shoe. Contact a podiatrist today for more information about different types of running shoes.

If you are a runner, wearing the right running shoe is essential. For more information, contact one of our podiatrists from Summerlin Foot & Ankle. Our doctors can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

Choosing the Right Running Shoe for Your Foot Type

To increase performance and avoid the risk of injury, it is important to choose the right running shoe based on your foot type. The general design of running shoes revolves around pronation, which is how the ankle rolls from outside to inside when the foot strikes the ground.

  • Neutral runners are able to choose from a wide variety of shoes, including minimalist shoes or even going barefoot.
  • Runners who overpronate, or experience an over-abundance of ankle rolling, should choose shoes that provide extra motion control and stability.
  • Runners who underpronate, or supinate, have feet that have high arches and lack flexibility, preventing shock absorption. They require shoes with more flexibility and cushion.

There are several reasons why elderly people may encounter foot problems. The fat pads in the feet may become thinner, and the skin may be drier. Severely cracked heels that are known as fissures may develop, and relief can come from using a good moisturizer. Many seniors have poor circulation, which may lead to the inability to feel existing cuts or wounds on the feet. One of the best things elderly people can do for their feet is to wear shoes and socks that fit correctly. Research has shown the feet become wider as the aging process occurs, and larger shoes may need to be purchased. It may be beneficial to lose extra weight which may help to prevent heel spurs and plantar fasciitis from developing. This is helpful in reducing the pressure the heels endure from completing daily activities. It is suggested that elderly people are under the regular care of a podiatrist who can identify potential foot problems, and offer effective prevention and treatment tips.

Proper foot care is something many older adults forget to consider. If you have any concerns about your feet and ankles, contact one of our podiatrists from Summerlin Foot & Ankle. Our doctors can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

The Elderly and Their Feet

As we age we start to notice many changes in our body, but the elder population may not notice them right away. Medical conditions may prevent the elderly to take notice of their foot health right away. Poor vision is a lead contributor to not taking action for the elderly.

Common Conditions

  • Neuropathy – can reduce feeling in the feet and can hide many life-threatening medical conditions.
  • Reduced flexibility – prevents the ability of proper toenail trimming, and foot cleaning. If left untreated, it may lead to further medical issues.
  • Foot sores – amongst the older population can be serious before they are discovered. Some of the problematic conditions they may face are:
  • Gouging toenails affecting nearby toe
  • Shoes that don’t fit properly
  • Pressure sores
  • Loss of circulation in legs & feet
  • Edema & swelling of feet and ankles

Susceptible Infections

Diabetes and poor circulation can cause general loss of sensitivity over the years, turning a simple cut into a serious issue.
